Las Vegas with Kids: How to Plan a Family Trip Everyone Will Actually Love

June 25, 20266 min readElevated Rentals

Las Vegas has a reputation as an adults-only playground, and sure, the Strip at midnight is nobody's idea of a toddler activity. But here's what most families discover once they actually show up: this city is enormous, endlessly entertaining, and surprisingly well-suited to traveling with kids — especially when you swap a cramped hotel room for a private vacation rental with a pool, a game room, and enough bedrooms that the adults actually get their own space. We've helped hundreds of families do Las Vegas right, and we're sharing everything we know.

Why a Vacation Rental Changes Everything for Families

Think about the math of a typical hotel stay with kids: two or three rooms, a tiny bathroom, no kitchen, no common space to decompress at the end of the day. Everyone's on top of each other, dining out gets expensive fast, and there's nowhere for the kids to burn off energy after dinner. A private vacation rental flips all of that. You get a full kitchen for easy breakfasts and late-night snacks, living areas where the family can actually breathe, and — in our case — private pools, game rooms, and outdoor spaces that become a destination in themselves. Many families tell us their kids spent half the trip happily at the house and considered it the best part of the vacation.

Choosing the Right Home for Your Group Size

Getting the right number of beds and bathrooms is the single most important decision you'll make. Underbooking space leads to cranky mornings and arguments over who gets the pull-out couch. We always recommend erring one bedroom larger than you think you need — the extra cost is almost always worth it. Here's how we think about sizing:

"We thought we'd spend most of the trip on the Strip. We ended up spending two full days just at the house — the kids didn't want to leave the pool." — A guest family, traveling with three kids under 10

The Best Family-Friendly Activities Beyond the Strip

The Strip itself has more family content than people expect — think the Bellagio fountains, the Mirage volcano show, the aquarium at Mandalay Bay, and the High Roller observation wheel. But Las Vegas's greatest family secret is everything that surrounds it. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is just 30 minutes from most of our homes and offers easy scenic drives, beginner hiking trails, and the kind of wide-open desert scenery that genuinely awes kids and adults alike. The Nevada State Museum and the Discovery Children's Museum in the downtown Arts District are both excellent half-day options. For thrill-seekers in the family, the Las Vegas Mini Grand Prix has go-karts and kiddie rides. And of course, the Pinball Hall of Fame is an absolute must — hundreds of classic machines, and it costs almost nothing to play.

Making Your Home Base Work for the Whole Family

One of the most practical tips we give families is to treat your rental home like a base camp. Stock the kitchen on your first afternoon — a grocery run to Smith's or Whole Foods takes 30 minutes and saves you hundreds of dollars over a week. Plan at least one or two dinners at home; after a long day of sightseeing, nobody wants to wait for a restaurant table with hungry kids. Set a loose daily rhythm: mornings at the house, afternoons out exploring, evenings back at the pool or game room. This structure helps kids (and their parents) stay regulated and keeps meltdowns to a minimum. A private pool in the afternoon is one of the most effective kid-resets we know of.

If you're traveling with a large extended family or multiple families together, consider a home with dedicated entertainment spaces. Our Wild Oasis Villa has a custom rock-grotto pool with waterfalls and a swim-up bar, an oversized heated spa, a full game room with arcade and poker, and a chef's kitchen — all under one roof for up to 12 guests. It's the kind of home where the adults can relax by the pool while the kids are fully occupied in the game room, and everyone ends up in the kitchen together at dinnertime. That's the family vacation sweet spot.

A Few Honest Notes on Las Vegas with Kids

We'd rather be straight with you than oversell it. The Strip itself is loud, crowded, and — especially in peak summer heat — genuinely exhausting for young children. Plan your Strip visits in the morning or early evening, not midday in July. Keep them short and purposeful. Very young children (under 5) are generally happiest spending most of their time at your rental home, with short outings to parks, splash pads, or the Children's Museum. Older kids and teenagers, on the other hand, tend to love Las Vegas — the energy, the novelty, the food, and the sheer spectacle of it all. This is one of those rare destinations that genuinely works for a multigenerational group, as long as you plan the days thoughtfully and have a great home to come back to.
